day 18 - corinth, mycenae and nafplio

Mycenae - bloody beautiful. The countryside is so gorgeous, surrounded by lush olive groves and high up on a remote mountain, this is one of the best ruins ever. Interesting to see the place where all the items from the archaeological museum came from and not filled with swarms of tourists. Peaceful and startling in its magnitude and serenity. Corinth canal was pretty cool - started by Nero and only finished in 1893. One of my missions for the trip was to find a really really tacky beach towel. Objective achieved when I saw this zinger - kittens in a watermelon! Who ever thought of such a thing. I found it at a dusty old out of the way souvenir shop looked like it hadn't had customers in years. The man who sold it to me was an old school gem - i feared for his hips as he got onto a rickety old chair to get the towel for me, and had to wait as he ceremoniously folded it and put it thoughtfully into a bag for me. Good buy.
